Atkins appointed to design sustainable water park in Abu Dhabi

Aldar has committed to making the facility one of the most environmentally friendly and sustainable water parks in the world. Atkins, which was also responsible for Wild Wadi Water Park in nearby Dubai, is designing the park’s buildings to meet Estidama guidelines[1] and is engineering ways to dramatically reduce energy and water consumption.
The facility will feature more than 40 rides and attractions, including four one-of-a-kind rides that have never been seen before in a water park.

Commenting on the project, Mohammed Al Mubarak, Chief Commercial Officer of Aldar Properties, said: "This facility will provide a unique entertainment opportunity for people of all ages, enabling families and individuals alike to indulge in a thrilling entertainment experience that reflects our rich maritime culture."

The Water Park will join a range of world-class recreational attractions at Yas Island such as Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the world's first Ferrari theme park and largest attraction of its kind, which opens on 28th October. Yas Island is also home to Yas Marina Circuit, host venue for the Formula 1™ Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Yas Links, the region's first true links golf course, Yas Marina and Yas Yacht Club, and seven hotels including The Yas Hotel, the first hotel in the world to span a Grand Prix circuit.

Sami Asad, Chief Operating Officer of Aldar Properties, added: "The water park will bring in another distinct feature to Yas Island, further diversifying its already impressive offering. It will be a valuable addition to the other attractions that will set Yas Island apart as a major leisure destination and will reinforce Abu Dhabi's position as a great place to live, work and visit." Aldar has already received the conceptual planning approval for the Park from the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council and has started the prequalification process for main contractors for the project. Construction work will begin in July 2010, with the project scheduled for delivery in 2012.
Allel Hadri, client director for Atkins, said: “This is an incredible project to be working on. It’s not every day we get the opportunity to think about water slides and attractions, so our architects and engineers have to adopt a completely different mindset.

“Beyond this, we have to consider all aspects of infrastructure design right down to shaded walkways and methods of queuing, while also ensuring the facility meets our client’s sustainability targets.”
